The name "Hutt Lagoon" was given by Sir George Grey, an English explorer, writer, and military figure. The name was chosen to honor Sir William Hutt, a politician from the British Liberal Party who played an important role in the development of the colonies in Western Australia, South Australia, and New Zealand.
