Originally, this bridge, located in the Minato ward of Tokyo, was named the Shuto Kōsoku 11-gō Daiba-sen Tōkyō-kō Renryaku-kyō, or Shuto Expressway No. 11 Daiba Route - Port of Tokyo Connector Bridge, connecting Shibaura Pier and Odaiba Island. The name "Rainbow Bridge" was given by the public, who were captivated by its beauty.
The official name of the Rainbow Bridge is the Tokyo Port Connecting Bridge or Tokyo Port Bridge. The official Japanese name for this bridge is Tōkyō-kō Renryaku-kyō (東京港連絡橋), which means Tokyo Port Connecting Bridge. This bridge, technically known as the Tokyo Bay Connector Bridge, is also often called the Odaiba Bridge or Odaiba Rainbow Bridge because it serves as the main access route to the Odaiba tourist area.

Construction History and Official Opening of Rainbow Bridge Tokyo
Construction of the bridge began in January 1987, with Kawasaki Heavy Industries serving as the contractor. Construction was completed in 1993, and the bridge was officially opened on August 26, 1993. The Rainbow Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the northern part of Tokyo Bay, connecting the Tokyo mainland with the artificial island of Odaiba. The bridge stands 52 meters above sea level. It is 798 meters long, 49 meters wide, and has a main span (the longest distance between its two main towers) of 570 meters. A total of 520 lights were installed on the bridge, including the LEDioc FLOOD FULL-COLOR 240W, which produces better and more efficient light colors, the LEDioc FLOOD ZEST Simple Model Class 800, featuring high color rendering, and the LEDioc FLOOD NEO Class 70.
A total of 176 LED lights were installed on the upper part of the main tower, 84 LED lights on the lower part of the main tower, 28 LED lights under the bridge girders, 80 LED lights at the bridge anchorage, and 152 colorful lights on the bridge suspension cables. These lights are energy-efficient and environmentally friendly because they use solar power. These colorful LED lights are arranged in such a way that they create a rainbow light effect on the bridge when illuminated at night. This technological marvel has successfully boosted the popularity of the Rainbow Bridge, making it known worldwide.

There are 1.7-kilometer-long pedestrian paths on both sides of the bridge: the north path and the south path. These two pedestrian paths, separated by the Yurikamome line and a public road, are accessible from both the Odaiba and Shibaura sides. By walking, you can enjoy the scenery from various angles and take stunning photos.
Although the Rainbow Bridge is open 24 hours a day to vehicles, its operating hours are limited for pedestrians. The pedestrian path, known as the Rainbow Promenade, is open from 09.00 to 21.00 during the summer (April–October). During the winter season (November–March), operating hours are slightly shorter, from 10.00 to 18.00. Visitors are still permitted to enter the Rainbow Promenade 30 minutes before the bridge closes. The pedestrian path is closed on the third Monday of every month. Additionally, the pedestrian path is closed during inclement weather, including strong winds.

To ensure cyclists don't break the rules by pedaling, staff at the entrance will place a small wooden sled under the rear wheel of the bicycle, preventing the rear wheel from spinning on the road surface. This rule is in place to ensure the safety and comfort of all visitors, given the narrow pedestrian path and heavy foot traffic.

Crossing Rainbow Bridge via the Yurikamome is a unique experience that combines modern transportation with scenic sightseeing.
