A vast expanse of clear water can transform into a lush green meadow, only to eventually fill with water again and become a lake at an unpredictable time. Location of Tarusan Kamang Lake
Administratively, Tarusan Kamang Lake is located within the territories of Jorong Babukik and Jorong Halalang (Babukik Hamlet and Halalang Hamlet), Nagari Kamang Mudiak (Kamang Mudiak Village), Kamang Magek Subdistrict, Agam Regency, West Sumatra Province, Indonesia. This geological vanishing lake, situated at the foot of the Bukit Barisan mountain range, is located about 14 km north of Bukittinggi, a city with the second-largest economy in West Sumatra and nicknamed the “Paris of Sumatra” during the Dutch colonial era.

Tarusan Kamang Lake is an ephemeral lake famous for its unique phenomenon, it can disappear and transform into a grassland. Geologically, this tourist attraction was formed atop an ancient limestone zone and lies directly along the eastern Sumatran fault zone. Unlike ordinary lakes, the ebb and flow of water here does not depend entirely on the rainy or dry seasons but rather on the dynamics of groundwater. The lake can dry up completely and transform into a vast expanse of green grassland for periods ranging from 5 months to more than 2 years. When water appears, this vast and deep body of water can also persist for anywhere from 5 months to 2 years before eventually receding back into the earth. When fully filled with water, there is a fairly large mound of land in the middle of the lake that remains above water; the local community calls it Padang Doto.
The Water Cycle of Kamang Tarusan Lake is Unpredictable
The tidal process of Tarusan Kamang Lake is very mysterious and unpredictable. Local residents usually look for distinctive natural signs before the lake fills with water. Before the water recedes, mysterious rumbling or explosive sounds are often heard coming from the foothills near the lake. Sometimes, residents also hear a “gluk gluk gluk” sound, or a sound like boiling water. These sounds are usually heard from several locations. A few days after these sounds are heard, large amounts of water will gush out from holes in the limestone, and the grassland will be completely transformed into a vast lake.
Why Does the Water in Tarusan Kamang Lake Disappear?
Tarusan Kamang Lake is an example of a karst lake (dolina)—a lake formed in limestone regions through the dissolution of rock by water. Many karst lakes appear periodically. These types of lakes can fill to capacity during the rainy season and recede completely, turning into dry grasslands during the dry season. Connected to underground rivers, these lakes act like air valves. Beneath the lake bed lies a network of caves and underground water passages that regulate when water is drawn into the earth or gushes to the surface.

Tarusan Kamang Lake serves a dual function that is highly adaptive for the surrounding community. The drastic transformation from a water-filled lake to a grassland creates a unique economic and social cycle. When the lake is full, the community uses it for bathing, fishing, and fish farming. There are various types of fish in this seasonal lake, such as tilapia, white bada, rayo, pantau, and panser. Tarusan Kamang Lake is also a popular natural tourist attraction where visitors can fish, rent rowboats, or bamboo rafts (kompek) to explore the lake. When the water is completely drained into the fault line, the lake bed transforms into a lush green grassland, which residents can use for grazing livestock or as a playground for children.
Tarusan Kamang Lake Was Once an Ancient Seabed
Many people assume that the hills surrounding Tarusan Kamang Lake have always been part of a highland region; however, research conducted by geology expert Prof. Handang Bachtiar and his team in February 2013 revealed the opposite to be true. Based on the composition of the soil, the Tarusan Kamang Lake area is strongly believed to have once been the floor of an ancient ocean. The most compelling evidence for this theory is the presence of massive limestone deposits along the lake’s shores. Scientifically speaking, limestone generally forms in shallow marine environments from the accumulation of marine organisms that died millions of years ago, such as corals and shellfish shells. Tectonic plate movement subsequently lifted this seafloor to the surface, forming the limestone hill clusters seen today.

Another interesting fact uncovered by researchers is the age of the rocks at this site. The karst hill range in the area surrounding Tarusan Kamang Lake is estimated to be 300 to 400 million years old. This figure indicates that the karst formations here are much older than the karst structures found on Java. Due to this age factor, the soil atop the karst hills has undergone complete weathering, allowing trees to grow there. This contrasts with typical limestone hills, which tend to be barren.
The Role of the Sumatran Fault Zone in Tarusan Kamang Lake's Water Cycle
In addition to the ancient limestone, the geological structure of Tarusan Kamang Lake is also heavily influenced by tectonic activity. This area is located near the eastern part of the Sumatran Fault Zone. Plate tectonic activity along this active fault has created numerous cracks, fissures, and fractures within the underground rock layers. These fault voids serve as pathways for water to move dynamically from deep within the earth to the surface—or vice versa.

In a short time, the grassy plain transforms into a lake of clear water. Conversely, when the water supply in the underground river network decreases, the holes at the bottom of the basin function like the drain holes in a bathtub. The water is sucked back into the earth, leaving the lake bed dry.
